5 Fun Things to Do in Newport Beach Over Labor Day Weekend 2026

newport beach Cassie French August 21, 2026

Labor Day weekend is the unofficial grand finale of summer—and there may be no better place to celebrate than Newport Beach.

From cruising Newport Harbor and biking the Balboa Peninsula to shopping, beach days and frozen bananas, you can plan an entire weekend without traveling more than a few miles. Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7, 2026, giving you three glorious days to enjoy Newport Beach before summer begins winding down.

Here are five of my favorite ways to spend Labor Day weekend in Newport Beach.

1. Ride Bikes Along the Balboa Peninsula

One of the best ways to experience Newport Beach is on two wheels. Rent a beach cruiser and ride along the Balboa Peninsula, where you’ll have ocean views on one side and plenty of places to stop for food and drinks along the way.

You can begin near the Newport Pier, continue toward the Balboa Pier and explore the Balboa Fun Zone before riding back. Stop for breakfast, fish tacos, a waterfront lunch or a cocktail—because biking is technically cardio, even when there are margaritas involved.

Labor Day weekend can get busy, so start early for cooler weather, fewer crowds and easier parking. Always slow down around pedestrians and walk your bike through heavily congested areas.

2. Plan a Chic Newport Beach Beach Day

Sometimes the best plan is no plan beyond finding a beautiful spot in the sand.

Pack a cooler, sunscreen, towels and a few beach games, then head to the Peninsula or Corona del Mar for the day. If you want to elevate your setup, check out the incredibly chic beach chairs from SUN’Y.

SUN’Y is a Newport Beach-designed business offering lightweight backpack beach chairs made with recycled ocean-bound plastic. The chairs are functional, sustainable and substantially cuter than dragging an ancient folding chair out of the garage.

Arrive early to claim a good spot, particularly around the Newport and Balboa piers. Holiday parking is its own competitive sport in Newport Beach.

3. Cruise Newport Harbor or Charter a Boat to Emerald Bay

You cannot spend Labor Day weekend in Newport Beach without getting on the water.

For a relaxed afternoon with friends or family, rent a Duffy boat and cruise Newport Harbor. Bring appetizers, drinks and a playlist while you pass waterfront homes, Balboa Island and some of the most beautiful yachts in Southern California. Duffy boats are easy to operate, but reservations should be made early for a holiday weekend.

If you would prefer to let someone else handle the boat, charter one through OC Boat Rentals. Ask for Captain Steve Rogers—yes, that really is his name, and yes, that makes him extremely qualified to captain your Labor Day adventure. The company offers everything from Duffy rentals to larger boats and private charters.

For a full coastal experience, charter a boat and head toward Emerald Bay near Laguna Beach. Its clear water, sheltered cove and dramatic coastline make it feel like you escaped to a private resort without ever boarding a plane.

You can also watch for Floatchella, Newport Beach’s floating celebration where boats gather together for music, dancing and an only-in-Newport kind of afternoon. Organizers have announced another Floatchella gathering for Labor Day weekend 2026, but check their latest social updates before making plans because the precise time and gathering location may change.

Always use a sober operator or licensed captain, bring enough life jackets and follow harbor rules. Champagne tastes significantly better when everyone makes it home safely.

4. Shop, Eat and Escape the Heat at Fashion Island

If you need a break from the beach—or simply want an excuse to shop—spend an afternoon at Fashion Island.

Browse the shops, take in the ocean views and plan lunch or brunch at one of these favorites:

If the afternoon gets especially warm, see a movie at THE LOT or Regal Edwards Big Newport and enjoy two luxurious hours of air conditioning. Regal Edwards Big Newport is expected to close permanently after its operating agreement ends in June 2027, so there is still time to visit the iconic local theater before the curtain eventually comes down.

5. Bike to Balboa Island and Take the Ferry Back

For the quintessential Newport Beach day, ride your bikes to Balboa Island and explore Marine Avenue’s local boutiques, cafés and charming storefronts.

No trip to the island is complete without ordering a freshly dipped Balboa Bar or frozen banana. You can choose your chocolate, add toppings and pretend it doesn’t count because you arrived by bicycle.

After exploring the island, take your bikes aboard the historic Balboa Island Ferry. The ferry has carried passengers, bicycles and vehicles between Balboa Island and the Peninsula since 1919, and the crossing takes only a few minutes. From the Peninsula landing, continue through the Balboa Fun Zone and ride back along the beach.

It’s active, scenic, nostalgic and one of those experiences that still feels special no matter how many times you do it.

Make the Most of Labor Day Weekend in Newport Beach

Labor Day weekend brings some of the biggest crowds of the summer, but a little planning makes all the difference.

Reserve boats, bikes and restaurants in advance. Arrive early for beach parking, bring layers for cooler evenings and avoid driving whenever you can. A bike, Duffy boat and comfortable pair of shoes can get you surprisingly far in Newport Beach.

Whether you spend the weekend boating, biking, shopping or doing absolutely nothing in a very attractive beach chair, Newport Beach offers the perfect way to say goodbye to summer.

And if spending the weekend here has you wondering what it would be like to call Newport Beach home, I would love to show you around. As a local real estate agent, interior designer and home stager, I help buyers find the right Newport Beach neighborhood—and help sellers make their homes impossible to overlook.
